If you’re the marketing team behind Halo 5: Guardians, then your job has to be a piece of cake. Are you going to promote it? Of course. Do you have to? Probably not. When Guardians hits the shelves on October 27th, copies won’t stay there long. However, if you’re an actual member of the marketing team then congratulations… You’re nailing it.
Over at huntthetruth.tumblr.com you can join the hunt to figure out the truth. Who is the real Master Chief? Who is John-117? In the Halo Universe, war photographer and journalist Benjamin Giraud is leading the investigation and is opening the question to an audience. Giraud, voiced by the great Keegan-Michael Key, has been recruited by the Office of Naval Intelligence to unearth information about who Master Chief really is. He releases episodes of his journey via SoundCloud and reveals what he learns through interviews with those who knew John when he was a student in Elysium City. Is he the hero we believe? Or, is it possible that he’s a traitor? The episodes are only around twelve minutes and weave a wonderful narrative that’s full of suspense.
Then the two trailers dropped. One follows Spartan Locke, from Halo: Nightfall, as he walks through a desolate land and questions Master Chief’s actions. He reaches a wounded Master Chief below a towering statue and aims his weapon. The next trailer is similar, but we see Master Chief strolling through a landscape much like the previous one and coming across Locke. He appears to possibly be talking to himself or aggressively questioning Locke about his journey to find him and if it was all worth it. Chief states that his journey is, “just beginning,” and he points his gun at Locke.
