Well, it’s official. In my local town, the Halloween store opened its doors. The warehouse-style building unleashed the ghosts of October to the world. And, while it may only be August, depending on when you read this, it’s never too early to prepare for one of the best holidays.
Think about it, Halloween is the cosplay holiday. The one day out of the year where many agree that dressing up as a character is not only okay, it’s encouraged.
I mean, sure, you’ve got people going as generic vampires and princesses and werewolves—those being more general cultural creations—but, nowhere outside of a con will you see as many superheroes, famous wizards, beloved aliens, and well-known video game protagonists wandering the streets.
If you are a cosplayer, this is a great time to show off your creativity.
Plus, with all these stores opening, it’s not as hard to find various props and pieces and special makeup as it would be normally. I mean, sure, online stores exist, and some are truly excellent too, but there’s a magic to browsing shelves and finding something you never thought you would. Though, if you do want to still shop online, stuff is also more likely to be in stock around this time.
Regardless, get started my cosplaying friends. This is your Christmas. This is your New Years. Well, this and whatever your favorite con is. But, in any case, go out and prepare. Get sewing. Get assembling. Find those pieces that will let you be the character you always wanted to be. The starting horn is officially blown.
