There are many reasons that we may not have received radio communications or a visit from aliens yet. While the Drake Equation satisfies the idea that life is in fact common in the universe, it is also spread out very far and possibly brief in nature, possibly explaining the fact why we haven’t met an aliens species yet.

They are too far away, and we haven’t been listening long enough

This is considered a big reason we haven’t come in contact or received communications from another intelligent species. If optimistically we were separated from our nearest intelligent neighbour by ten thousand light years, it is entirely possible that we are never going to meet them unless faster than light travel is developed. This may not be possible and there is no known method of doing this presently. Radio waves also travel at light speed, so for the very short amount of time we have been transmitting information (50 years or so) there is almost zero chance anybody would be aware of our existence.

They are at different technological levels to us and cannot communicate

The idea of sending out radio signals runs on an assumption that aliens are actually attempting to receive radio signals for more than a short amount of time. It is known that our communication methods are evolving, and such signals may become extinct in our own society eventually.

Aliens exist in some sort of post-human state

Well, not post human but post-alien. A technological discovery may have occurred that allowed all minds to leave the human body and be downloaded onto a computer where they live in some form of digital bliss. Perhaps they have entered some kind of ethereal realm and are pure thought only. It is possible that we cannot even comprehend the communication other species in the universe may be using.

They are here now and watching

There are a few ideas surrounding this one. The first is that the governments do have contact with them but it’s a big secret being kept from everyone. The other is that they are here now but undetectable to humans and simply observe us. Another idea is that the Earth is some kind of Zoo, set up in a synthetic reality. All of these ideas provide good fodder for conspiracy theorists around the world.

They don’t want to talk with us

It is entirely possible that a spaceship or probe did come into proximity of us in modern times. Perhaps it probed out internet and downloaded thousands of lolcats, demotivational posters and various other internet memes. The aliens then cast harsh judgement on us and turned away in disgust, looking for a better group to make contact with.

Dinner and a movie has long been a popular choice for a date, in fact it’s the classic. However it is surprisingly rare that the food consumed complements the movie watched. To remedy this here are some food and film combinations that may (or may not) make the perfect date!

Blade Runner – Noodles

Let’s face it. What else are people going to eat in an over populated semi-apocalyptic future of diminishing resources? This sci-fi tale of rogue robots with limited life spans has substantial and important scenes set in the hustle and bustle of a neon lit Chinatown. Noodles don’t just fit the tone they feature too, as scoffed by antihero Deckard. And for that reason they make the perfect post-movie meal.

The Godfather – Oranges

Watching the Godfather is quite an event and the sensible choice would be a hearty Italian meal, and of course this would be a good match. Nevertheless snacking on oranges is far cooler in relation to this movie. It might not be that obvious, but note the moment oranges are seen on screen. Each time they indicate the demise of a character. Yes, oranges in The Godfather are essentially the sign of an imminent death even if the set designer still claims they were used merely to brighten dull shots. It’s a grisly connection, but a good one and certainly demonstrates superior film trivia knowledge.

9 And A Half Weeks – Anything From The Refrigerator

This is not likely to be the best choice for a first date. In fact it’s definitely not, unless things are going really, really, really well. If you’ve not seen the film, then know it is pretty spicy and the scene in which Mickey Rourke treats Kim Basinger to dinner in is one of the hottest. Blindfolding her he sits her down in front of the refrigerator and feeds her pretty much whatever he can find, it all gets quite messy and rather than clearing up after themselves they attend to other pressing matters first. If you catch my drift.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom – Chilled Monkey Brains

Look upon this as extravagant and exotic rather than, ‘Give me your hat, I’m going to puke in it.’ Such delights might be hard to find in your local supermarket but don’t be put off, such a fine dessert will last long in the memory. Also be sure to present it with the over emphasized line, ‘Ah, chilled monkey brains.’

Shaun Of The Dead – Human Flesh

Zombie flicks are perfect as a date movies and it’s on trend, there is more zombie apocalypse in popular culture than your can wave a severed arm at. So why not after enjoying the referential undead swotting capers of Simon Pegg and his cronies chow down on some unsuspecting passers-by? What? It’s just an idea…

When not trying to source chilled monkey brains for geeky dinner parties Lesley Dawson spends his time researching quirky birthday gift ideas for Find Me A Gift.

One genre which has many followers across different parts of the world is action. Therefore, it is obvious that people are likely to give special attention to this genre. Every year many cinema listings are based on action and this year was no different. The following movies listed below will pump your adrenaline and cinema goers across the world have loved and adored these movies. Three of the following movies are the continuation of the existing series.

Let’s have a glance at some of the latest movies of 2011 in action genre which were actually good:
Pirates Of The Caribbean:

On Stranger Tides – The first in the list is the fourth installment of Pirates of Carribean, wherein Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, assuring us to offer many more humor filled action scenes. There are few 3-D scenes too, which would increase the entertainment quotient. Penelope Cruz is scintillating and the latest love interest of Jack Sparrow and Ian MnShane is the villain of the movie. It’s yet again a one-man show by Jack Sparrow, as he meticulously engages the audience with his humor-filled action stunts. If you have been watching the previous movies of this series, then this movie would certainly be really interesting.

Fast and Furious 5:

It’s an action bonanza for action lovers. Brian O’Conner and Ex-con Dom Toretto team up for conducting a heist of $100 million in Rio. Hobbs, who is an elite agent arrives to foil their plan and bust them. Lot of action sequences are stuffed in the movie, which would certainly keep the audience engaged till the end. The plot has much twist and turns which increases the excitement levels.

Kun Fu Panda 2:

As, I start writing about it, I must accept that it is not better than the Kunfu Panda 1. The movie starts with Po enjoying living his dream and as a Dragon warrior protecting people of Valley of peace and his companions are his friends and kung fu masters. The peace of the city is disturbed by a formidable enemy who wants to finish the kung fu and conquer China. Its now Po’s responsibility to unearth his hidden powers to save the China. A worthwhile watch, neverthless.

SUPER 8

When a movie is coming about from the geniuses like Steven Spielberg and J. J. Abrams, then it has got to be something unique and special. The movie lives up to the expectations of the masses. The movie is about a group of friends shooting a sci-fi with a Super 8 camera and while shooting they discover extra-terrestrial developments. It is an interesting and captivating movie and definitely deserves a place in the list.

Thor:

It’s an epic adventure, wherein the mighty Thor, a powerful and at the same time arrogant warrior becomes the reason for reigniting an ancient war. He is then sent to Earth to live with humans. However, when the most supreme villain of earth sends his dark forces for invading earth, it is then Thor rekindles himself and knows what it takes to be a hero.

Let’s face it, you can’t go to the seaside without hitting the arcades whilst you are there! From retro arcade games to more recent releases, we love them all! Of course some are better than others and when you don’t have much pocket change to spare, you will no doubt want to play the best of the best. For a list of the top ten arcade games to look out for just keep reading;

Street Fighter III 3rd Strike

It was obvious this beauty would make it onto the list. It’s a game which has becomeso popular that national and international tournaments are regularly held to crown players champion of the 2D beat ‘em up world! The game is a lot like other Street Fighters but with a twist. You can only use one super art move per match, giving the game an edge which no other Street Fighter has. With a mixture of drum and bass music, smooth 2D visuals and unusual Street Fighter characters mixed in with the classics, it’s easily one of the best fighting games of all time!

Time Crisis 2

Namco’s rail shooter popularized the genre and is ultimately the daddy of all rail shooters out there. It paved the way for co-operatively played rail shooters and was fuelled with adrenaline throughout its entirety. If ever there was a shooter you needed to look out for, this is it!

X-Men

Just how many other arcade games out there will allow you to play through a game with five other friends! X-Men is an extremely fun game which lets you play as any of your favourite X-Men characters and has that old retro feel to it which we all love.

Pacman

It doesn’t matter how old it gets, this game will always be one of the best! It’s a simple concept of dodging the ghosts to collect the little white dots, yet it’s probably more challenging than any game released on the Xbox 360! It would be a crime not to include Pacman in this list.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Whether it’s the old Sega Mega Drive games or the new ones, if you see this speedy blue hedgehog in an arcade you better get yourself to that machine! Being Sega’s mascot and influencing the platforms games of today, Sonic is easily one of the greatest video gaming characters of all time! Without Sonic, video gaming just wouldn’t be the same.

Metal Slug

Before there was Call of Duty, there was Metal Slug! A game which is very much like Gunstar Heroes but with a much darker edge to it. It might not have the best graphics in the world, or bring war to life, but it does have awesome music combined with explosions pretty much everywhere! Imagine a 2D Commando and you’ll pretty much have the exact interpretation of what Metal Slug is.Final Fight

Take Guy from the Street Fighter Alpha series, put him in a side scrolling game which is very much like Streets of Rage and you have yourself Final Fight! With its big chunky animated graphics and fantastic 32bit music, you can’t help but fall in love with this game.

King of Fighters ‘94

You can’t have a top ten list without mentioning one of the best fighters of all time! The King of Fighters franchise has been around for many years now and it was King of Fighters that combined Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury together into one big fighting frenzy. Of course all of the King of Fighters games deserve a play, but the reason I mention ’94 is because it’s the originator of the series!

Alien Vs Predator (Capcom edition)

You can play as either a marine or a predator and basically run through the game eliminating every alien in your path. It’s a cool little side scrolling game which actually lets you use Predator weaponry to take out the aliens and cause as much chaos as possible. When the game came out it was way ahead of its time and I definitely recommend this game over the newer releases.Dance Dance Revolution

I was compelled to add this into the list as it is so much fun! We’ve all seen these dancing games in action and although they are not to everyone’s taste for fear of feeling humiliated, you can guarantee a good time playing this game on Vs mode! Whether it’s Dance Dance Revolution or Dance Dance Revolution X, they are all just as fun as each other, so I urge you to break out of that shell and give them a go!

Time in RPGs

With the recent release of ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’, the time of the RPG (role-playing game) is once again upon all avid gamers. These genera above all can generally consume more time than other types of games as they offer a large, open immersive world in which the player can explore, interact with hundreds of resident characters and battle hundreds of enemies. So with this in mind, it’s worth looking at how you can make the most of your time in Skyrim without over doing it!

Firstly, we must give credit where credit is due; it doesn’t take long to realise Skyrim is everything that we were promised. With improved graphics, gameplay and a much more fluid combat engine, Skyrim gives an RPG experience that we have never seen presented with such quality and detail. The sense of complete freedom to roam the wilderness and build a character from scratch is enthralling; making moral decisions that can affect your in-game reputation can make for a very convincing social system and adds to the overall sense of realism within the world of Skyrim.

Time Tracking

Throwing yourself into Skyrim is without a doubt one of the best RPG experiences available to date; but as with many RPGs, Skyrim can be incredibly time consuming and hours can fly by with little effort. The theory is always the same with RGPs; the longer you play the better it gets; new equipment and skills become available to you as your character develops. This is what pushes players to stay and play longer; the urge to further develop your in-game character can add an extra two hours to a gaming session without a second thought.

Spending too much time in open world RPGs is a common problem (particularly in massive multi player RPGs) and over exposure can encourage late nights, missing work and late schoolwork assignments. So when (not if) you find yourself spending a little too much time aback your trusty steed, maybe it’s time to start assessing exactly how much time is suitable for you or your children to spend in the fantasy worlds of RPGs!

A good way of assessing how much time you have spent in-game is by using the time tracking displayed on the ‘load game’ menu; the majority of RPG games will have this feature. Be sure to allocate time for all of your priorities before getting too involved with these games, if you have any work, assignments or social activities planned then try not to involve the games at all that day; it’s all too easy to let them spill over into your other plans.

Take regular breaks and ensure you are getting plenty of fresh air and sunlight, RPGs are very immersive and it’s not hard to spend four or five hour’s in-game without thinking to take a break. Be sure to spend planty of time in your bathroom suites, many gamer’s personal hygiene can suffer when RPGs become too immersive. And lastly, go to bed on time! Skyrim is a very enthralling game and spending “just five more minutes” completing a mission can easily turn into another hour or two when you get side tracked or attacked out of the blue. If you have a set time at which you go to bed then stick to it,

Always remember to prioritise; these games are tempting to pick up at the busiest of times, and developing your character is a lengthy and painstaking process which is not to be rushed. Skyrim and other RPGs alike are games which are not intended to be rushed; play at your leisure and don’t turn it into a chore.

‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ is truly one of the most impressive single player RPG experiences available today, a huge immersive world and fascinating character development is sure to give any player hours of entertainment. Just remember to prioritise and play recreationally; appreciate the land of Skyrim one dragon at a time!

Want to get better at online video games but not sure where to start? Here’s a few tips on how to become a better gamer.

Make a thorough assessment of your computer/internet.

Firstly, you need to take stock of your computer and internet situation. Playing online games requires you to have a clean running internet connection, that is stable. Short disconnects and lag spikes happening at the wrong time during a game can cause game changing moments resulting in a loss. More losses equals lower rating. Lower rating means you play with and against worse players, and do not improve as quickly.

Making sure you have a good ping speed is part of the solution. It’s also important that your computer is running well. Make sure antivirus scans will not start mid game. Ensure your computer is free of spyware and malware, and anything that will slow it down. Be sure to stop your torrent software during a game, or at the very least cap the download and upload speed to around half your bandwidth to allow plenty of bandwidth for game information to be transferred.

Finally, check your peripherals. You keyboard and mouse should be working flawlessly. An impediment in keys or buttons that causes you to react an extra 10% slower is unacceptable. Imagine a runner showing up to a race with an injury making him 10% slower. They would no longer be competitive, and better off not running at all.

Therefore, any limiting factors with your computer and internet need to be addressed before we can make any other improvements to our gaming.

Your mindset and strategy.

Understand what factors make you win and lose. Try to improve the weakest aspect of your game. Part of being a great gamer, it to have won the game before it begins. We do this by entering the game with a strategy that makes it impossible for the opponent to beat us. Following this we need a mechanism of winning the game. Depending on the rules of the game, this may just mean obtaining an early edge, and then holding on to this edge all game by never exposing any weakness.

Playing games while hungry, fatigued or under the influence of drugs and alcohol will make you play worse on that game. This will also be detrimental to the development of your skills.

Play more

It takes thousands of matches to reach the highest levels or competitive gaming. Mechanics of a game are often complex and there are many small advantages that can be exploited to gain a winning edge. Experienced and good players know what the positional advantages in their game are, and aim to secure the winning position as quickly as possible. Playing more against good players will also give you insight into how opponents think and react. Be sure to observe patterns in their behaviour under certain conditions that you can exploit to win.

Follow these basic 3 things and you too, can improve your gaming to the next level.

Arguably the greatest action hero ever, here are my picks for the top 10 Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I never got that into the Conan movies, and leaving out the comedies just to make my job easier. I didn’t want to have to choose between “Kindergarten Cop” and “Junior” for the last spot.

1) True Lies

Absolutely phenomenal mix of action and comedy. The parallel between marriage crisis and terrorist threat is brilliant.

2) Terminator 2

Sci-fi at its best as compelling human storytelling makes you forget about the time travel plot full of logical holes every time you watch it. The T-1000 is not only cool to look at, but he uses his powers in creative ways, leading to some of the most wonderful action scenes ever.

3) T2: 3D – The Ride

It’s only 10 minutes long, but this Universal ride has some of Arnold’s best action, grabbing and swatting mini-HK’s and switching places with Edward Furlong in mid-air. Also some of his best lines. “He was my college roommate.”

4) Total Recall

Another classic sci-fi piece. Here, the plot could be real or imagined, and it’s a great story either way! I vote for imagined, because the Rekall guy says “Blue Sky on Mars” in the beginning. The journey from futuristic Earth to Mars is awesome.

5) The Terminator

Arnold’s evil performance here is now even more powerful in light of his total switcheroo in the sequel. Great chase scenes, and this was Cameron just getting warmed up.

6) Last Action Hero

The first 2/3 of this movie is an amazing spoof of the action genre. When they bring Jack Slater into the real world, the film contradicts itself by allowing some movie cliches. Had they just stuck to the film within the film, they had great cartoonish action scenes and laugh out loud sight gags. I still can’t get over seeing Stallone on the “T2″ poster.

7) The Running Man

Pure and simple – Bad guys, meet Arnold. Arnold, kill bad guys. There’s a media satire in here too, but it’s really a lot of cool fights and great lines. “He had to split.”

 Commando

Another simple one. Arnold goes after the guy who has his kid. This was really the start of it all. Arnold’s first good guy after “Terminator” made him an uberstar, this set up his modern-day hero as opposed to the “Conan” historic fantasy hero.

9) The Sixth Day

This really made me feel like the old late ‘80s/early ‘90s era of action sci-fi, little bit of message, lots of great lines, with a postmodern twist. “I might be back.”

10) Predator/Red Heat

“Predator” is actually kind of slow until the end fight, but it’s a great fight. Since that’s an iffy pick, I’ve got to give props to “Red Heat”. I just always liked this movie. James Belushi makes good fun out of the contrived situations and Arnold as a Russian, naked in the snow, playing chicken with busses… it just kinda works.
